King Arthur Foyer and Court

Knights in colorful uniform line the ceilings and guard entry to King Arthur Court, originally the Men’s Smoking Room. Inside the court, King Arthur’s life is depicted in colorful paintings on the ceiling beams, along with scenes of later Christian events and daily life in Gothic times.

Renaissance Room and Foyer

Chicago Intercontinental Hotel Function Rooms

In this spectacular lobby, one solidly arrives at the early, classical Italian Renaissance. Here, the beauty of this era is displayed with an array of classical Renaissance paintings above each elevator. The ceiling illustrations depict Italian ruins, temples, aqueducts and scenes of nature in the Renaissance style.
The Renaissance Room was designed to depict the indulgence and extravagance of the French Renaissance during the era of Louis XVI. The walls are paneled from floor to ceiling with imported Carpathian elm burlwood, a wood so rare that it would be impossible to replace. Ceiling beams are hand painted with Renaissance murals and are lit with the five original crystal chandeliers.

Intercontinental Hotel Grand Ballroom

The Grand Ballroom is magnificent both for its unusual elliptical shape and its many architectural details. Around the ceiling, 37 hand-painted murals of classical landscape scenes were taken down, restored and returned to their original locations. A new balcony was built to duplicate the original. The 12,000lb chandelier was restored, as was the gold leaf finish on the ceiling.
